In August 2026, Skydance reached one of our biggest milestones yet: performing two custom 400-drone shows at Sziget Festival 2026 in Budapest, Hungary.
For several nights every summer, Sziget transforms Budapest’s Óbuda Island into the legendary Island of Freedom – a place where music, art, culture and people from around the world come together.
For us, it was the perfect place to do what drone shows can do best: turn ideas, emotions and values into stories in the sky.
And we had the opportunity to do it twice in a week!
Two Nights. Two Shows. 400 Drones.
Skydance performed two different drone shows using 400 drones each during Sziget Festival 2026.
The first show took place on Tuesday, the opening day of the festival, and was designed as part of the official Sziget opening experience.
Two days later, on Thursday, we returned to the sky with another custom show – this time also highlighting VISA, one of Sziget’s major partners.
Both performances took place imidiately after the headliner concerts had finished on the Main Stage.
This means thousands of visitors were already gathered in the heart of the festival, in front of the main stage to experience this magical moment.
The stage went dark… Attention moved upwards… And 400 bright lights appeared above the Island of Freedom near the main stage.
We couldn’t see the show as it was meant to be from our perspective, but we could hear around 40.000 “wooooows” when the show began. It felt amazing!
Turning Sziget's Values Into Magical Moments
We didn’t want to create a show that was simply visually impressive.
It needed to feel like Sziget. We wanted people to connect and vibe with the show.
The creative concept was therefore built around some of the values that define the festival: Freedom. Equality. Connection. Love. Peace. Unity.
Using 400 drones as individual pixels in the night sky, we transformed these ideas into recognizable visual elements. Some were symbolic, others were more abstract.
And rather than creating a sequence of static images, we deliberately designed the choreography to be dynamic and closely connected to the music.
Drone formations transformed continuously while light pulses, colour changes and synchronized effects followed the rhythm and beat of the soundtrack.
The objective was simple: make the audience not only watch, but feel the show!
One moment in particular stood out – when a giant peace symbol appeared above the festival, people throughout the audience spontaneously raised their hands and made peace signs back towards the sky.
For a few seconds, a formation created by 400 drones became something shared by tens of thousands of people below.
Those are the moments we design drone shows for.
Designed Completely In-House
Everything the audience saw in the sky started weeks earlier on our screens.
The complete creative production was developed in-house by the Skydance team.
That included:
- initial concepts,
- storyboards,
- visual designs,
- drone formations,
- 3D animations,
- transitions,
- lighting effects,
- choreography,
- flight programming,
- and synchronization with music.
For the opening show, the soundtrack was prepared by Sziget’s DJ. For the second performance, we also produced the soundtrack ourselves.
Instead of adapting animations to an existing track, we could build individual musical moments around what was happening in the sky – and vice versa.
The result was a much tighter connection between sound, movement and light.
Synchronizing 400 Drones to the Millisecond
Our team therefore developed a dedicated timecode script specifically for those kind of performances.
The system allowed the soundtrack and drone choreography to run together with millisecond-level timing.
Every pulse of light. Every transition. Every movement. Every beat. All of it needed to happen at exactly the right moment.
When a musical impact arrived, the drones reacted with it. When the beat accelerated, the lighting effects followed. When the music changed its character, the formation above the festival changed with it. For the audience it looked effortless.
Behind the scenes, it was hundreds of aircraft, thousands of programmed movements and an enormous amount of preparation working together in real time. The outcome = Pure magic. Worth it!
Just Over a Month to Make It Happen
There was another challenge = Time.
The decision to work with Skydance came relatively late in the festival production process, leaving us just over a month to prepare everything.
That month became intense very quickly.
While our creative team was developing concepts, storyboards and animations, the operational team was simultaneously working on:
- flight planning,
- regulatory documentation,
- Hungarian operational requirements,
- authorization to perform the drone operation,
- site planning,
- safety procedures,
- equipment preparation,
- transport,
- logistics,
- testing,
- and coordination with the festival production team.
Performing a drone show at this scale combines and requires creative production, software development, aviation operation and live-event production experience.
A Perfect Result Above Sziget
Both Sziget performances were executed successfully and exactly as intended.
The organizers were extremely happy with the result.
VISA was happy with its show.
And most importantly, the reaction from the festival audience was incredible.
People stopped. Phones went into the air. Thousands looked towards the same point in the sky. And as the formations changed from one symbol to another, people reacted to them.
Some cheered. Some recorded. Some hugged. But all of them enjoyed it.
For us, that interaction was perhaps the best confirmation that the concept had worked. Because a great drone show shouldn’t just display something. It should create a moment.
The Sky Is Becoming Part of the Festivals
Festivals and concerts are about creating memorable experiences beyond the stage – and drone shows are becoming a powerful part of that.
Hundreds of synchronized drones can transform the night sky into a giant canvas for logos, symbols, messages and 3D animations, all precisely synchronized with music and lighting.
For festivals and concerts, this creates a unique way to tell a story, highlight event values, introduce artists or integrate sponsors into the experience without interrupting the atmosphere.
Drone shows are also naturally made for social media. When the sky suddenly comes alive, thousands of phones go up – extending the impact of the show far beyond the audience on-site.
Most importantly, they create something special: a moment when thousands of people look up and experience the same thing together.
The stage is no longer only in front of the audience. The sky becomes part of the show.
