  • your system is\u00a0validated and reliable,<\/strong><\/li>
  • and your\u00a0documentation is complete<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>

    It\u2019s a serious process, and it takes time. But once your authorization is in place, things get smoother \u2014 also when working abroad. For example within the EU, cross-border operations can be much easier to handle once you already have authorization in your country.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

    A drone show isn\u2019t \u201ca pilot and some drones.\u201d It\u2019s a coordinated production with clear roles, and every role matters.<\/p>

    To deliver a show safely and reliably, you need a trained team that covers everything from design to execution, including:<\/p>

    • Operational manager<\/strong>\u00a0(responsible for planning, safety, and procedures)<\/li>
    • Licensed pilot<\/strong>\u00a0(in charge of drones and equipment)<\/li>
    • Technicians<\/strong>\u00a0(setup, batteries, platforms, antennas, troubleshooting)<\/li>
    • Observers \/ spotters<\/strong>\u00a0(monitoring the safety area and airspace)<\/li>
    • Security staff<\/strong>\u00a0(when there\u2019s a chance people could enter the show area \u2014 roads, paths, open public spaces)<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

      This is where the magic really starts.<\/p>

      In practice you need\u00a0two types of software<\/span>:<\/p>

      • Choreography \/ design software<\/span>\u00a0(to create formations, transitions, colors, timing)<\/li>
      • Ground Control Station (GCS) software<\/span> (to command and monitor the fleet during setup and flight)<\/li><\/ul>

        For choreography, there are several approaches on the market. Some teams use Blender with add-ons; others use dedicated software like SPH or similar systems. The first show takes a lot of training and patience \u2014but once you learn it, it becomes the fun part, because creativity really has no limits here.<\/p>

        Once the choreography is done, you\u00a0export it in the format your drone system supports<\/span>\u00a0and store the files for later deployment (once your drones and site setup are ready).<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

        The main component of any drone show is, of course, the drones \u2014 but these are not ordinary drones with an LED taped onto them. Drone show drones are purpose-built. They\u2019re typically:<\/p>\n

          \n
        • compact and easy to deploy at scale<\/li>\n
        • equipped with powerful LEDs designed for visibility<\/li>\n
        • built for accurate positioning and stable formations<\/li>\n
        • fitted with reliable fail-safes designed for swarm operations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          Most modern systems also use\u00a0platform-based setups<\/strong>, where drones take off and land from dedicated platforms. These platforms speed up deployment and reduce the ground space needed.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

          As much as the drones get all the attention, a drone show requires an entire technical ecosystem to control and support them.<\/p>

          Beyond the drones themselves, you typically need:<\/p>

          • RTK GPS system<\/strong>\u00a0(for high-accuracy positioning)<\/li>
          • server\/network system<\/strong>\u00a0to build a local intranet for the operation<\/li>
          • Wi-Fi or other antennas<\/strong>\u00a0for stable communication between drones and the control station<\/li>
          • Ground Control Station (GCS)<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 essentially the brain of the operation<\/li><\/ul>

            And then all the practical necessities:<\/p>

            • tripods for antennas\/GPS<\/li>
            • at least two laptops<\/li>
            • power supply solutions<\/li>
            • transport cases, tools, spare parts<\/li>

              Here\u2019s what the whole process typically looks like for Skydance from the first conversation to show night:<\/p>

              1) Discovery and planning<\/strong><\/h4>

              First, we sit down with the customer and understand:<\/p>

              • why they want a drone show<\/li>
              • where it will happen<\/li>
              • what kind of message or moment they want to create<\/li>
              • and what the event setup looks like (schedule, crowd, venue constraints)<\/li><\/ul>

                2) Feasibility check<\/strong><\/h4>

                Before we design anything, the team checks:<\/p>

                • execution restrictions at the location (terrain, obstacles, audience layout)<\/li>
                • airspace and regulatory limitations<\/li>
                • any other operational constraints that could affect the show<\/li><\/ul>

                  If it\u2019s feasible, we move forward.<\/p>

                  3) Storyboard and concept<\/strong><\/h4>

                  Next comes the creative stage: we work with the customer on a\u00a0storyboard<\/strong>.
                  This is the bridge between \u201cideas\u201d and a choreography that actually feels purposeful. Once we have a concept defined, then we can move to creating actual choreography in the choreography design software.<\/p>

                  4) Choreography creation<\/strong><\/h4>

                  This is the most labor-intensive part. Designer will need to:<\/p>

                  • create shapes that look clean with the available number of drones,<\/li>
                  • designing smooth transitions,<\/li>
                  • adding color effects that feel dynamic and emotional,<\/li>
                  • adjust timing based on the background music or voice over and<\/li>
                  • perform in-app feasibility checks.<\/li><\/ul>

                    It\u2019s hours of detail work \u2014 and it\u2019s what separates a \u201ccool tech demo\u201d from a show people remember.<\/p>

                    5) Testing and validation<\/strong><\/h4>

                    Once the choreography is ready, we test it at our testing location.
                    This stage is where we validate performance and catch issues early \u2014 before we\u2019re in front of an audience.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

                    6) Regulatory preparation<\/strong><\/h4>

                    In parallel, the regulatory side is handled properly:<\/p>

                    • Concept of Operations (ConOps),<\/li>
                    • coordination with local stakeholders\/authorities,<\/li>
                    • required notifications and documentation and<\/li>
                    • risk assessment and safety planning.<\/li><\/ul>

                      7) Show day setup<\/strong><\/h4>

                      On show day, we typically arrive\u00a0at least 4 hours before<\/strong>\u00a0the performance.<\/p>

                      One of the most important parts is antenna placement. Because we use unidirectional antennas with a 50\u201360\u00b0 beam angle, we need to be 100% sure the whole flight area has strong coverage.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

                      When equipment and drones are positioned, we run a detailed checklist with:<\/p>

                      • GPS\/RTK status,<\/li>
                      • battery and system health and<\/li>
                      • redundancy readiness.<\/li><\/ul>
